Thursday and Sunday Markets Closed – Update from the Mayor

After careful consideration and weighing up the risks NWTC has decided to cancel the Thursday and Sunday Markets until the current COVID-19 outbreak has been addressed. The safety of the residents of North Walsham is our highest priority and we are in the fortunate position of being in control of our own Markets, we feel therefore duty bound to take this measure to protect the residents, I would ask that you all continue to look out for each other and offer help where you can especially to those who are on their own or self isolating and reach out when needed to the numerous help groups such as the North Walsham Neighbourhood scheme The situation will be continuously monitored and once safe to do so the market will resume.
Cllr Garry Bull
Mayor
North Walsham

LIBRARY

Norfolk’s libraries are CLOSED as part of the county council’s ongoing response to Coronavirus.

With the Government advising people to avoid group contact, the county council has decided to close library buildings – with the exception of libraries offering registration appointments.

Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, the cabinet member responsible for libraries, said: ““We have kept our libraries open for as long as possible, as crucial community hubs – but the fast moving situation and updated Government advice means we now have to close them. We will maintain online services and will keep people posted on our website.”

Items that have been borrowed already will be automatically renewed until further notice, so that people can keep library books at home. Existing overdue charges on accounts won’t increase over time The council has also announced the closure of the Norfolk records office and the Holt and Whitlingham outdoor centres and adult learning centres, for the same reason.

A message from our Mayor, Cllr Garry Bull

Dear Residents of North Walsham, The whole country is adapting to the new constraints and advice being issued by the Government. North Walsham Town Council recognises that many residents are likely to be self-isolating in the coming weeks and months, and will not be able to go shopping, collect medication or other essentials. The Town is extremely fortunate to have the very well-established Good Neighbours group, whose volunteers already offer short term practical support to residents. They will be extending their services to those in need during the current crisis. Recognising that the Town Council could assist them it has taken on the task of printing and distributing (by the end of the week), the Good Neighbours Scheme’s Information leaflet to every home in North Walsham. This will ensure that everybody is informed on the support available to those who have no family or neighbours available to help. The Council will also provide assistance with funding to help with the running costs of this increased workload. There is further information available at www.nwtc.org.uk/coronavirus-information including a list of local organisations and businesses offering assistance

During the undoubtedly difficult times ahead I am sure that the good people of North Walsham will rally around and help others where possible and ensure that the elderly and vulnerable are not forgotten, please reach out to your neighbours and relatives and assist others where possible.

Anyone who needs help should contact Good Neighbours on 01692 558321 or enquiries@nwgoodneighbour.org.uk

If you can help Good Neighbours in a practical way then contact Volunteers@nwgoodneighbour.org.uk

To safeguard the health of its staff and the public, the Annual Town meeting on 17th April is now cancelled as is also the Annual Civic Dinner on 22nd May, both will be rescheduled when conditions permit. However, nominations for the council’s Community Awards, new for 2020, are still very much welcome.
